DNR Cost Share Contracting
for Wildfire Resilience and Forest Health
What is it?
A state program that provides technical & financial assistance to implement forest health and wildfire mitigation treatments.
How do I qualify?
You must own less than 5,000 forested acres in Washington state (non-federal owners of forestland).

What costs are covered by the program?
The DNR program offers 1) a free consultation to gauge your wildfire and forest health risks, then 2) share in paying for the cost of treatment.
What forestry services are eligible for cost-sharing?
- Forest Stewardship Plans (prepared by a private consulting forester)
- flammable brush control
- non-commercial thinning
- pruning
- slash disposal
- creation of “defensible space” around structures
How much reimbursement is available?
Most of the time up to 50% of the program cost is reimbursable. In some cases, 75-100% of the cost may be reimbursed, if you can get your neighbors involved.

Consultations typically take between 30 minutes to 2 hours. (depends on property size)
How long will it take to find out whether my application for cost-sharing is approved?
It typically takes 1-2 weeks.
How long will it take for someone to contact me to schedule a consultation?
You’ll be contacted in the order your inquiry was received. The DNR tries to be as timely as possible with requests.
Does land need to be in a “forestry” property tax classification to qualify?
No. Forested land qualifies regardless of its property tax classification status.
